Persons with Disabilities Affirmative Action 'Incompletes' 'Snow Days'
  •   Students Experiencing Disabilities
    • In accordance with KSU policy, if you have a documented disability and require reasonable accommodations to obtain equal access in this course, you should contact the course instructor at the beginning of the semester, or when given an assignment for which an accommodation is required. Students with disabilities must verify their eligibility through the Student Disability Services in the Michael Schwartz Student Services Center (330.672.2972).

  •   KSU is committed to Affirmative Action: Affirmative Action is the name given to programs whose primary intent is to:
    • Eliminate unlawful discrimination in employment and educational opportunities;
    • Remedy lingering effects of past discrimination;
    • Create systems and procedures to prevent future discrimination.

  •   'Incompletes'
    • University regulations are rigid almost beyond belief about who may receive forbearance in their late-completion of course requirements. So, if late-completion seems like something you're contemplating then speak to the instructor as early as you can ... the alternative may be that neither of us has an alternative! Pre-planning is crucial. Of course, demonstrable emergencies such as your illness, death of a close family member, or your dog ate your zip-disk for example, are all relatively easy to handle — but a failure to plan for the 'Final' is less likely to weigh into the decision equation.

  •   'Snow Days' ~ I want to be sure that we all understand when and how classes are delayed/cancelled due to inclement weather …
    • Whenever the Winter weather becomes inclement then somewhere in the university administration a gnome makes the vital decision whether the university should be closed or not. That gnome is a particularly strong and robust fellow ~ he never gets the flu and seems impervious to frigid conditions. He rarely decides that it's ever too cold, windy or snowy enough to cancel classes. However, when he does declare a weather emergency then he disseminates the news on local radio and television stations. He doesn't tell staff or faculty any differently than other university customers. Thus, faculty and staff get no earlier notice about these decisions and have no better knowledge about his thinking than those who listen to the weather reports. No-one knows the identity of this gnome.

    • KSU has a 'don't ask, don't tell' policy on weather. Please don't ask for weather forecasts, we cannot tell...  Office personnel are instructed to never relay messages about weather warnings, snow advisories or even the current weather on campus. They're instructed to never make guesses about the weather's prospects for Kent. Remember, most of us don't even have a window in our offices so we have little or no knowledge about the present weather outside.

    • The KSU Home Page always has accurate and up-to-date information excepting that it is not updated with the morning's snow situation until sometime after 8:00 a.m. and so an early morning closing won't necessarily be reflected until after the breakfast hour. But since most SPSY students typically don’t have a.m. classes that's hardly a hardship to us... I am usually in my office most of the day on Wednesdays prior to our SocLng class. Call on me if you have questions ~ however, keep in mind that I’m as much in the dark about weather forecasting as you’ll be.
